Taking a half-step backward, Cal turtled his neck slightly. All told, his reaction was actually quite controlled: he'd anticipated such a response from Mama, and since he'd been given some time while outside to think things through (well, sort of), he managed to blurt out a fairly prompt reply.

Thanks! And not quite (though you wouldn't be the first one to guess that!). Sam hurt his hand entwining the barbed wire into the Christmas wreath. FWIW, the backstory to that as posted in reply to ~crfh-maritza below:

"In short: The wreath was a gift from Grandma Ruth -- for the express purpose of Christmasing up the DeSoto -- and they didn't want anyone to louse it up. Max heard holly berries were poisonous so he added those and the note to it. Sam knows they're just mildly toxic to humans and safe for most vermin, but he doesn't tell Max. That said, Sam does install the barbed wire himself because, dammit, it's a gift from his Gram-Gram and he's not going to let anyone mess with it."
